What is an Inland Port?

An inland port is an inland intermodal terminal directly connected by road or rail to a seaport, operating as a center for the trans-shipment of sea cargo to inland destinations.

Intermodal freight transport involves the transportation of freight in an intermodal container (CONEX) or vehicle, using multiple modes of transportation (e.g., rail, ship, aircraft, and truck), without any handling of the freight itself when changing modes. This method reduces cargo handling, and so improves security, reduces damage and loss, and allows freight to be transported faster. Reduced costs over road trucking is the key benefit for inter-continental use. This may be offset by reduced timings for road transport over shorter distances.

Inland ports open new location options, which help meet other operating needs (e.g., access to desired labor pool, lower cost area, and/or more effective distribution channels). These ports also help connect the inland United States with more global markets, boosting local, state, and regional economies.

In regard to the Inland Port in Greer, this port connects the 212-mile passage to Greer from Charleston’s port (Port of Charleston).

We’re a proud partner to Inland Port Greer, providing reliable transportation of CONEX ocean containers for our customers.  Service Transport can work with your cargo shipments to get them loaded and on their way. 7By working with Service Transport to arrange your intermodal ground transportation, you’re working with a team of professionals offering a variety of necessary services to meet your needs.
